When taekwondo is introduced into the Sydney 2000 Games as one of two new Olympic sports, the games ending the second millennium will be "introducing" a sport that is 2000 years old. Murals in the ruins of royal Korean tombs some 2000 years old show men practising a form of unarmed combat. The martial-arts tradition persisted over the centuries, enjoying a glory day 800 years ago when a self-defence art called su-bak emerged with a strong following. Evidence even suggests it was practised as a sport in the truest sense, to entertain spectators.Although the sport declined, the arts survived, and, when Korea was liberated after World War II, national interest in martial arts surged again. A move in the 1950s to unify the various forms and create one sport led to taekwondo, meaning "the way of hands and feet." By the 1960s, interest was spreading overseas. http://www.olympics.com/eng/sports/TK/about/index.html
http://www.olympics.com/eng/sports/TK/history/home.html History Taekwondo is 42 years old or 2000 years old, depending on which way you look at it.Specifically, the name and the rules were born in 1957. In reality, the makings of the sport date back to ancient times, with murals of men engaged in unarmed combat found in the ruins of royal Korean tombs almost 2000 years old. The martial arts have remained part of Korean culture throughout the millenniums since that time. They soared to a high point 800 years ago, when a self-defence art called su-bak gained a large following. Evidence even suggests it became a sport in the truest sense, entertaining spectators.
Su-bak eventually faded from the public scene, but the martial arts survived as recreation. In the first half of the 20th century, Japanese occupation led to an attempt to wipe out Korean culture, including the country's martial arts, yet they still survived. Then, after World War II ended and Korea was liberated, interest surged again.

South Korean kumdo leaders are insisting that kendo was originated from Korea. They are intentionally fabricating and distorting the history of kendo. We worry about the extension of the false rumor in contradiction to the historical fact.
I feel concern over some leading Koreans' ongoing invention of Kendo history.
This webpage will explicate how Kendo, or the Japanese fencing, has evolved in Japan and demonstrate how groundless and preposterous some Koreans' argument that the sport is a Korean martial art by origin.

Kendo,Judo, aikido were originated from Japan. Karate was originate from Okinawa and Chinese. Japan taught these martial arts Korean people during the Japanese annexation. Kumdo, yudo, hapkido, taekwondo were originated from Japan. THIS IS THE ONLY FACT. Why do most korea people concerning Korea martila arts conceal this claer fact? Why do they fabricate the origin of Korea martial arts? This is a shameful act.
http://pub26.ezboard.com/fbobsstarwarsstufffrm5.showMessage?topicID=30.topic I've been reading your page on lighsabre techniques, and cannot figure out why you think nothing makes sense unless it is from Kendo. Again, no offense intended. For instance, the tennis thing where Qui-Gon blocks a shot with a whatever it's called. That makes perfent sense in that situation; how would a Kendo (or Kumdo as it is called in Korea) CUT be used to DEFLECT a shot back and away?
Also, there are many styles that use both circular and spinning motions. You might be interested in going here:
IMHO the lightsabre (despite the name - which relates to a "slice" style european weapon) in its USE and DESIGN is a *CUTTING* weapon ... it severs through, and its use must be appropriate to its capabilities. It can be used to merely slice or chop, but to be effective, a style that is midway between kendo (the "sport' use of a light, straight bamboo training katana) and kenjutsu, tameshigiri, iaido (or similar) .. ie: using a REAL weapon ... would be a good starting point.
本の書評にこんな事書くかあ? http://turtlepress.com/RelatedProduct.asp?CODE=MDTJ I have read and enjoyed this book, it was well written, and it is the history that our style is orginated from. I plan on getting a ★copy for our chief instructor for Christmas,
were adapted from ancient Japanese and Chinese martial skills by Korean warriors during the Yi Dynasty. This is a fascinating look at the ancient martial arts of Korea.
http://turtlepress.com/Excerpt.asp?ArtNumber=54 It is interesting to note that they included not only Chinese fighting methods in the manual but also the Japanese sword methods which had been totally ignored at the beginning of the dynasty. It is obvious that they wanted to prepare for both enemies.
>>316 そこの下の方にあるランキングのとこ見てたら11位に あったのを見つけたんです。 18位の Sword And Weapon Artsのとこにもこんなことを言う奴発見 Has anyone here heard of the Korean Hwa Rang warriors of the Silla, there skills with the blade greatly surpased that of a samurai. Their sword art can be found in Hwa Rang Do and Kumdo.
I train in the Asano Ryu Bujutsu (Kenjutsu included) and if memory serves Me correct, the metal processing for superior swords and some design actually came from the Korean sword-smiths, so We actually owe a debt of gratitude to Korea for its contribution to the propogation of our Sword-arts/methods regardless of style or country of origin...

Their research seemed to say that although there is a strong Karate influence as a result of the Japanese occupation, once WW2 ended, the Koreans sought to distance TKD greatly from its "Korean Karate" label by intermixing many aspects from Koreas traditional arts such as Tae Kyon which were all but destroyed during the occupation.

Yet historically the bow was their main weapon, not the sword, and court nobility and military aristocracy both practiced archery (kyudo) for ceremonial reasons as well as to hone martial and hunting skills. The peculiar off-center grip of the long Japanese bow shows its martial origins; it was designed to allow archery from horseback. Because of this, kyudo may be considered the oldest of Japan's martial arts "
