Netizens to stage Internet protest against Japan's history textbooks on Liberation Day
Korean Internet users will hold online demonstrations on Japanese Internet sites Aug. 15, Korea's Liberation Day, to protest Japan's approval of distorted history textbooks and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's planned visit to Yasukuni Shrine, organizers said yesterday.
Organizers of the demonstration, including "Prevention of the Usage of Distorted Japanese History Textbooks" and "Anti-Japan," said they plan to paralyze the Internet systems of six Japanese Web sites by inviting as many participants as possible to simultaneously log on at specified times Aug. 15.
The Japanese government's authorization in April of the textbooks, which allegedly whitewash Japan's colonial and wartime atrocities in Asia, has strained diplomatic ties between Japan and Korea.
[Anniversary Interviews] Japanese envoy questions Seoul's bid to table textbook issue on U.N. meetings
Reemphasizing that Japan and Korea solve the history textbook dispute between themselves, Tokyo's top diplomat here expressed displeasure with Seoul's plan to discuss the issue at international forums, particularly as Korea will chair the main United Nations assembly.
Terada expected that few of the nearly 500 educational committees in Japanese prefectures would adopt the controversial history textbook published by Fuso Publishing, when they decide by Aug. 15 on which one of the eight different textbooks will be used by their middle school students.
Touching on the stalled negotiations between Japan and North Korea over the normalization of their relationship, Terada said there would be little progress in the process as long as Pyongyang's relations with Seoul and Washington remain in the doldrums.
To gain the upper hand in future negotiations with the United States and South Korea, he said, North Korea will use support from Russia and China.
Terada also tried to soothe mounting concerns among Koreans about Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's planned visit to Yasukuni Shrine, which keeps the tablets of war dead, saying the prime minister neither wants to glorify the war criminals nor justify their deeds.
More exchanges needed to resolve textbook issue, U.S. scholar says
Korea should step up its cultural and educational exchanges with Japan to help minimize distorted facts in textbooks rather than suspending them, said a U.S. educator yesterday.
"It is important for each country in the world to grasp an aspect of another's culture and values in order to understand them fully, and it can only be done by having more interchanges," said Jack R. Fraenkel, a professor at San Francisco State University, in an interview with The Korea Herald.
Fraenkel came to Seoul recently to participate in a seminar organized by the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI).
Asked about his thoughts on the recent Korea-Japan history textbook controversy, he said, "it is crucial for public publishers to gain more freedom in authoring and publishing textbooks, with less interference from the government, not just in Japan but also in Korea."
"Students are bound to get in contact with the real history one way or another in this global era, so it would be meaningless for the educators to hide certain facts, as it is done right now in Japan," he said.
He said the government should try to expand exchanges while also pressing the Japanese government to correct the distortions.
"Even in the United States, there are often disputes among groups regarding textbooks where one says that the book omits or distorts certain facts," he said.
He said, however, "But since most of the textbooks are published by private or public companies, amendments are usually made soon after an argument is raised, because they are willing to make corrections when needed."

"I was hurt and I cried, though flowers were in bloom. I threw myself away and locked me inside myself," sang Mun Pil-gi, 77, who was a comfort woman beginning in her teens for the Japanese army during the Second World War. She sang a song titled "Deprived Innocence" on the recently released tribute album for Korean comfort women.
The idea for this tribute album was conceived by Im Sang-hun, 23, a musician who debuted in 1998 as a songwriter and singer in both Korea and China.
Topic 1 : Why Japan doesn't apology to neighbor countries for Japan's illegal invading, Sexual Slavery & 731?? If Japan apologize to neighbors with sincere & honest mind, neighbors have a enough warm mind to accept it.
Topic 2 : Is it necessary to expand military money of Japan? Actually, their investment amount for military is 2nd in the world. Next to U.S.A. And larger that Korean annual GDP.
